Just want William James?
Hello! My name is William James. I was born on January 11th, 1842, in a busy place called New York City. My family loved to learn and travel. My younger brother, Henry, grew up to be a famous writer! We traveled all over the world, which made me very curious about everything and everyone. I always wanted to know how things worked and why people behaved the way they did. My childhood was full of questions and adventures.
When I grew up, I wasn't sure what I wanted to be. First, I thought I would be a painter because I loved art. Then, I went to school to study science and became a medical doctor in 1869. But what I was most curious about was not the body, but the mind! I wanted to know: Why do we feel happy or sad? What are thoughts? These were the big questions that I wanted to spend my life trying to answer. I felt that understanding the mind was the most important work I could do.
I decided to become a teacher. In 1872, I started working at a big school called Harvard University. I loved teaching students about how their own minds worked. It was so exciting to see them learn about themselves. To help us all learn more, I even started one of the very first psychology laboratories in America. In my lab, we could study our thoughts and feelings scientifically, just like other scientists study plants or stars.
I also shared my ideas by writing. In 1890, I wrote a very important book called 'The Principles of Psychology.' In it, I shared one of my biggest ideas. I said that our thoughts are like a 'stream of consciousness.' Think of a river that is always flowing and changing—that's how our thoughts are! They don't just stop and start; they flow from one to the next, connecting our ideas and feelings in a constant stream.

I lived to be 68 years old, and I spent my life thinking, teaching, and writing. Today, people call me the 'Father of American Psychology.' My ideas helped people all over the world understand that our feelings and thoughts are important, and they are still studied today to help us all understand ourselves a little better.
