The story

Wu Cheng'en

Hello! My name is Wu Cheng'en. I was a writer who lived a very long time ago in China, during a time called the Ming dynasty. I was born around the year 1500 in a town called Huai'an. When I was a boy, we didn't have video games or television, but my world was filled with something even better: amazing stories. My father was a smart man who loved to read, and he shared fantastic tales with me about magical creatures, brave heroes, and mischievous gods. I would spend hours and hours imagining these worlds. Even as a child, I knew that one day I wanted to create my own stories just like the ones I loved so much.

In my time, the best way to get a good job was to pass very difficult tests called the imperial examinations. I studied hard for many years, reading all the classic books and practicing my writing. It was a long and challenging path. I tried to pass the highest-level exams many times, but I did not succeed. It was discouraging to fail, but I never gave up on learning and improving my mind. My hard work was finally noticed, and in the year 1544, when I was already a grown man, I earned a place at a special university. For a while, I worked for the government as a magistrate, which is like being a local judge. However, I soon realized that I did not enjoy that kind of work. My heart was always with my books and the magical worlds of stories.

After I retired from my government job, I finally had the time to do what I truly loved: write. I remembered all the old legends I had heard as a child about a real Buddhist monk named Xuanzang. Long ago, he had traveled from China all the way to India to collect sacred scriptures. I thought to myself, 'What if his journey was even more exciting and full of adventure?'. So, I decided to write a fantastical story about it. To help the monk on his quest, I created a group of unforgettable characters. The most famous was a brave and naughty monkey named Sun Wukong, who had incredible magical powers. I also added a greedy but good-hearted pig-man named Zhu Bajie and a quiet, dependable river monster named Sha Wujing. Together, this unlikely group faced powerful demons, scary monsters, and all sorts of difficult challenges. I spent many years writing my book, which I called Journey to the West. I likely finished it around the year 1570.

When my book was first published, I did not put my name on it, so for a long time, no one was sure who wrote it. I lived to be about 82 years old and passed away around the year 1582. It was only after I was gone that people began to realize that I was the author of this incredible adventure. Today, Journey to the West is one of the most famous and beloved stories in all of China. My character, the Monkey King, is a hero to millions of children and adults. My story has inspired countless movies, cartoons, and plays. I am happy that it continues to spark the imaginations of people all over the world, showing them the power of friendship, courage, and never giving up on a difficult journey.
