Have you ever seen a wiggly caterpillar munching on a leaf and wondered what it would become. Or watched a tiny tadpole swimming in a pond and imagined it hopping on land. That’s me at work. I am the secret recipe that turns a baby animal into a grown-up. I am a circle of change, a pattern for growing. Before anyone knew my name, they saw me making a fluffy chick hatch from an egg and a tiny kitten grow into a big cat. I am the amazing, turning, growing story inside every creature. For a very long time, people saw me but didn't quite understand. Thousands of years ago, around 3000 BCE, people in ancient Egypt watched scarab beetles appear as if by magic from little balls of dirt, and they thought I was a symbol of new life. Later, in ancient Greece, a very curious man named Aristotle, who lived around 350 BCE, spent hours watching creatures. He was one of the first people to write down my secrets, describing how a fuzzy caterpillar wraps itself in a cozy case before becoming a beautiful butterfly. But even then, some people thought caterpillars and butterflies were two different animals. It took a brave artist and scientist named Maria Sibylla Merian to show everyone the truth. In the year 1699, she sailed across the ocean to study insects. She painted beautiful, careful pictures of me in action, showing every single step of my journey. Her paintings proved that the caterpillar and the butterfly were the same creature, just at different parts of their story.
