Beat and Tempo

Have you ever felt a little thump-thump-thump inside your chest? That’s your heart, and it has a special secret. It’s me. I’m the steady tap-tap-tap of your feet walking to school, the drip-drip-drip of a leaky faucet, and the swish-swish-swish of a broom sweeping the floor. I am a secret, steady friend that helps you walk, run, and even feel calm and sleepy at night. I help you keep everything in order, like a quiet little drummer just for you. Before you even knew my name, I was there, keeping time with your life. Hello. You can call me Beat, and I have a cousin who loves to change my speed. Sometimes I'm slow, and sometimes I'm super fast. My cousin is called Tempo, and together, we make the world move.

A long, long, long time ago, even before there were houses or schools, people discovered me. Around 40,000 BCE, early humans sat around crackling fires and found me when they clapped their hands together. Clap-clap-clap. They found me when they hit sticks on logs. Thump-thump-thump. They used me to make the very first music and tell stories. I was their special rhythm. Thousands of years later, in a place called Ancient Greece, around 500 BCE, people thought I was very important for their poems and dances. They would stomp their feet and chant words, and I was the pulse that kept them all together. For a very long time, people just had to remember how I felt. But then, a clever monk named Guido of Arezzo, around the 11th century, helped invent a way to write me down on paper using special little dots and lines. This was amazing because now people could share me with friends far away. But there was still one tricky part. How fast or slow should I be? My cousin Tempo was hard to describe. Finally, in the year 1815, a man named Johann Maelzel invented a wonderful little machine called a metronome. It was like a ticking clock for music, and it went tick-tock, tick-tock, helping everyone agree on my speed. Now, musicians could play together perfectly.

Today, I am everywhere. You can hear me in the songs that play on the radio, making you want to dance in the car. I'm in the music in movies, making your heart race during an exciting chase or feel cozy during a happy moment. I'm even in the video games you play, changing my speed to match the action. My cousin Tempo and I love to play together. I can be fast and full of energy, perfect for a birthday party dance-off.
