The Tiny Building Block
I am super, super tiny—so small you can't see me. I am inside every living thing: the wiggling worm, the tallest tree, and even you. I am in your nose and on your toes. You use building blocks to make a castle, and I am the building block that makes you. I have a special name. I am a Cell.
For a very, very long time, nobody knew I was here. I was a secret because I am so small. Then, way back in the year 1665, a curious man named Robert Hooke used a special looking glass called a microscope. He wanted to see things up close. He looked at a tiny piece of cork from a tree and saw something amazing. He saw lots of little rooms, like a honeycomb in a beehive. He decided to call these little rooms 'cells.' He was the very first person to ever see me, and he was so surprised to discover my secret world.
I love to work with all my cell friends. Together, we are a giant team. We help you grow bigger and stronger every single day. When you get a little scrape on your knee, we get busy making new cells to make your skin all better again. Everything that is alive is made of a team of cells, just like me. So when you see a flower bloom or feel yourself getting taller, remember me, your tiny, mighty friend, the Cell.
