Just want Decomposers?
Have you ever seen an old leaf on the ground or an apple core in the garden slowly disappear. That's me at work. I'm like a secret recycler. When plants and animals finish their lives, I arrive to gently break them down into tiny, tiny pieces. I munch and crunch until they become part of the soil again. I don't have a big name you hear every day, but I'm one of the most important helpers on Earth. I make the ground clean and ready for new things to grow.
So who am I. I am the Decomposers. That’s a big word for a giant team of tiny living things, like fuzzy fungi, wiggly worms, and itsy-bitsy bacteria you can't even see. People have noticed my work for a very long time. Way back around 10,000 BCE, the first farmers saw how I made their soil dark and rich, perfect for growing yummy food. Even wise thinkers in the 4th century BCE, like a man named Aristotle, watched me turn old plants back into earth. But it wasn't until the 19th century that scientists like Louis Pasteur used special microscopes to finally see my tiny team of bacteria and fungi hard at work, wiggling and munching away.
My job is the best because I help start new life. By turning old things into healthy soil, I make a cozy bed full of food for new seeds. That soil helps a tiny seed sprout and grow into a big, strong tree that gives us fruit and shady places to play. I am part of nature’s amazing circle, always working to clean up the old and make way for the new. I promise to keep helping our world stay healthy and beautiful, one fallen leaf at a time. It makes me happy to see new flowers bloom.
