The story

The Story of Drawing

Have you ever made a wiggle with your finger in the soft sand. Or a swirl on a foggy window. You can make zig-zags and circles and big, happy dots. I help you make all those wonderful shapes and lines with just a little push and a pull. I can be a straight line or a loopy-loop. I can be a tiny speck or a giant shape. Do you know who I am. I am Drawing.

My first home was a dark, cozy cave. A very, very, very long time ago, people lived there. They didn't have paper or crayons like you do, so they used me right on the big stone walls. They used dark, burnt sticks to make lines. They used soft, colored dirt to make reds and browns. They drew big, fuzzy mammoths with long trunks and strong horses running fast. I helped them tell stories about their world and show everyone what they saw outside their cave home. I loved helping them share their adventures on the walls for everyone to see. It was so exciting to bring their world to life in the flickering firelight.

After a long, long time, I moved out of the caves and found new homes. People in a sunny place called Egypt put me on special paper made from tall plants that grew by the water. This was also a long time ago. Now, I am everywhere. I am in your bright, colorful crayons. I am in your sharp, pointy pencils. I am right at your fingertips, ready to play whenever you are. I love helping you show your big ideas and happy feelings. I am always ready to help you tell your own stories. What will you make with me today.
