Have you ever swirled your finger on a foggy window or dragged a stick through the mud to make a shape. That’s me. I am the line that connects your imagination to the world. Before you even know my name, you use me to create curly scribbles, tall trees, and smiling suns. I am Drawing, and I am one of the oldest and most wonderful ways to share what’s inside your head and heart.

My story begins a very, very long time ago. Imagine a world with no books, no photos, and no screens. Way back, more than 44,000 years ago, early humans found me inside dark caves in places like Sulawesi in Indonesia. They used charcoal from their fires and colorful dirt to put me on the stone walls. They drew pictures of the animals they hunted, like wild pigs and buffalo, and traced the shapes of their own hands. It was like they were saying, 'We were here. This is our story.' I was their first storybook.

As people grew smarter, they found new ways to use me. In ancient Egypt, around 3000 BCE, people used me to create a special picture-language called hieroglyphs. They drew birds, eyes, and squiggly lines on long paper scrolls called papyrus to write down their laws and stories about their kings and queens. Thousands of years later, during a time called the Renaissance in the 1400s and 1500s, amazing artists and thinkers like Leonardo da Vinci used me for everything. He drew detailed pictures of the human body to understand how it worked, and he even sketched ideas for incredible inventions, like flying machines.

Today, I am everywhere. I am in the funnies of a comic book, the beautiful pictures in your favorite stories, and the secret plans an architect uses to design a skyscraper. Animators use me to make cartoons dance across the screen, and fashion designers use me to dream up new clothes. But my favorite place to be is with you. Every time you pick up a crayon, a pencil, or a marker, you are using me to bring your ideas to life. You are telling your own story, just like those first people in the caves. So go ahead—draw your world, your dreams, your adventures. I’ll be right there with you, every line of the way.
