Exponents (Powers)

Hello there. Do you want to know a secret? I give numbers a special superpower to grow really, really fast. Imagine you have one yummy cookie. Then, poof. It doubles to two cookies. Then, poof. It doubles again to four cookies. I'm the one who helps them multiply like that. I am like a number's magic wand, helping it get bigger and bigger, faster and faster.

A long, long time ago, around the year 2000 BCE, people in a place called Babylonia saw how I could make numbers grow in special patterns. They made lists to keep track of me. But I did not have my own special look yet. Many years later, a very smart man named René Descartes gave me a cool costume. In the year 1637, he decided to write me as a little number that floats up high, like a tiny superhero cape. This little number tells the big number how many times to multiply itself. So, if you see a 2 with a little 3, it means 2 times 2 times 2. Isn't that neat?
