The Sharing Numbers

Do you like to share your yummy cookies. Or your favorite toys. I am a secret helper who makes sure everyone gets a fair share. Imagine you have six big, round cookies. Your friend comes to play. I whisper in your ear that you can each have three. One, two, three for you. And one, two, three for your friend. See. It's perfectly fair. I am also there when you build with your colorful blocks in neat, even rows. I help you put your sparkly stickers into little groups on a page. I am the happy feeling when things fit together just right.

Are you ready to know my name. Hello. I am Factors and Multiples. People found me a very, very long time ago. It was before there were cars or playgrounds or even ice cream. Way back, around the year 2000 BCE, people in faraway places called Egypt and Babylon used me. They needed me to build their big, pointy pyramids so the blocks would fit just right. They used me to make sure every family had enough grain to eat, so no one was hungry. Later on, a very smart thinker named Euclid lived in a sunny place called Greece around the year 300 BCE. He wrote all about me in a big book to show everyone how numbers can work together like a friendly team.

I am not just in old stories. I am in your world, too. I am here to help you play and learn every single day. When you clap your hands to a song, I am in the steady beat. One, two, three, four. I am in the calendar that hangs on your wall, making the days line up in perfect weeks. When you hop down the sidewalk and skip-count by twos, I am hopping right there with you. I show you how numbers can be grouped together, shared fairly, and organized to make our world neat and wonderful. I am Factors and Multiples, your number helper.
