I hide in the quiet moments just before you fall asleep. I am the story your grandma tells about a clever rabbit who outsmarts a big bear. I am in the rustle of leaves that sounds like a hidden giant, and in the magic words that open a secret door. For a long, long time, I traveled through the world without a name. I carried lessons about being kind and warnings about talking to wolves in disguise. People shared me to teach and to entertain, but mostly to remember. My stories are some of the oldest in the world. You can call me Folktales, and I am happy to meet you.

Before many people knew how to read or write, I traveled on the air. For thousands of years, families shared me around cozy fires, and I would change a little with each telling, like a piece of clay being shaped by many hands. I journeyed from villages to towns, carried in the memories of travelers and merchants. Then, in a country called Germany during the 19th century, people worried I might be forgotten as the world started to change. Two brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, loved me very much. They spent years listening to storytellers in towns and villages. They carefully wrote down every word they heard. On December 20th, 1812, they published their first book of my stories. Inside were tales like 'Hansel and Gretel' and 'The Frog Prince,' so I could be saved forever and shared with everyone.

Even now, I am all around you. I am in your favorite animated movies about brave princesses and in picture books about talking animals. I teach you that being small does not mean you can't be brave, and that kindness is a special kind of magic that can change the world. I connect you to people who lived hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago, because they listened to the same stories you do. Every time you share a story that has been told before, you are keeping me alive and passing my wisdom on to someone new.
