The story

The Story of the Teeny-Tiny Germs

Have you ever felt a little tickle in your nose and then a big, loud 'Achoo!'. Or maybe you had a rumbly, grumbly tummy ache that made you want to snuggle up in bed. For a long, long time, people didn't understand why they felt sick. Some grown-ups thought it was because of yucky smells floating in the air. But that wasn't the real reason. I am a very important idea, a little secret that helped everyone solve the big mystery of getting sick.

Hello there. I am the Germ Theory of Disease. That’s a big name for a simple idea. My idea is that teeny-tiny, invisible living things called germs can sometimes make us feel unwell if they get inside our bodies. A kind doctor named Ignaz Semmelweis had a big clue in the 1840s. He saw that when doctors washed their hands, they helped keep mommies and babies from getting sick. A little later, in the 1860s, a super-smart scientist named Louis Pasteur showed everyone that these tiny germs were real. He proved they were everywhere, even if we can't see them with our eyes.

Because of me, you know one of the best ways to be a health superhero. You can wash your hands with soap and bubbly water. This washes the tricky germs away. I also taught doctors to keep their rooms and their tools extra clean to help people get better. My idea helped other smart people make special medicines and shots to protect you from germs. My idea is like a superpower that helps you and your friends stay healthy and strong, so you have lots of energy to play all day long.
