A Cozy Blanket for a Planet

Imagine a big, invisible blanket wrapped around the entire world. It’s a very special blanket. I let the warm, happy sunshine pass right through me to toast the ground, warm the oceans, and help all the flowers grow. But when some of that heat tries to bounce back into space, I catch it and hold it close to the planet. I am what keeps the Earth from getting too chilly, especially at night when the sun is on the other side of the world. Can you imagine what it would be like without me. Your days would be scorching hot, and your nights would be freezing cold. Brrr. I work very hard to make sure our planet is always ‘just right’ for all the amazing people, animals, and plants that call it home. You have probably seen how I work if you have ever stepped inside a greenhouse for plants. The glass walls let the sunlight in but keep the warm air from getting out, making it a toasty place for plants to grow. That is exactly how I got my name. I am the Greenhouse Effect.

For a very long time, people did not even know I was here. They just knew that the Earth was a comfortable and cozy place to live. Then, a curious French mathematician named Joseph Fourier started wondering about me way back in the year 1824. He did some complicated math and thought to himself, ‘Wait a minute. The Earth is much warmer than it should be if all the sun’s heat just escaped into space.’ He guessed that something in the air must be trapping the heat, just like the glass in a hothouse traps warmth for the plants inside. A little later, in 1856, an amazing American scientist named Eunice Newton Foote did a brilliant experiment. She filled different glass jars with different gases and put them in the sun to see what would happen. She discovered that a jar filled with a gas called carbon dioxide got much, much warmer than a jar of regular air. She was the first person to prove that certain gases could trap heat. A few years after that, an Irish scientist named John Tyndall also showed how gases like water vapor and carbon dioxide were my best helpers at holding onto warmth. Then, in 1896, a Swedish scientist named Svante Arrhenius calculated that if there was more carbon dioxide in the air, the whole world would get warmer. These clever people all worked like detectives, finding clues to figure out my secret.

So you see, I am a natural and very important part of what makes our planet so special and full of life. The problem is, my cozy blanket can get too thick. For the last couple of hundred years, since people started building big factories and driving cars, extra carbon dioxide and other gases have been added into the air. This makes me hold onto too much heat, and the planet starts to feel like it has a fever, getting warmer and warmer. But here is the wonderful part: now that you know all about me, you can help.
