Have you ever wondered what makes everything work. I am everywhere, but you can't see me with just your eyes. I am in the cool drop of water you drink, the sweet sugar in your cookie, and the big gulp of air you just breathed in. Think of me like a super, super tiny team of even tinier players called atoms. We hold hands very, very tightly to build everything you see, touch, and taste. For a long, long time, people just saw the big things I built, like shiny rocks, tall green trees, and fluffy white clouds. They would look at everything and wonder what secret recipe made it all work together so perfectly.

For a very long time, people had big ideas about what everything was made of. A very long time ago, way back in the 5th century BCE, a thinker in ancient Greece named Democritus had a clever thought. He imagined that if you cut something in half, and then in half again, and kept going, you would finally get to a tiny piece that couldn't be cut anymore. He gave it a name, 'atom'. But his idea was like a little seed that took thousands of years to grow. Then, in the early 1800s, a scientist named John Dalton started to figure out the recipes. He realized that atoms were like different kinds of building blocks. He showed everyone that the atoms in a puddle of water were different from the atoms floating in the air. A few years later, in 1811, another scientist named Amedeo Avogadro had a brilliant idea that helped everyone understand that atoms almost never work alone. They love to join up to form special teams. And that’s me. I am a Molecule, a special group of atoms all joined together.

Now that you know my secret name, you’ll find me everywhere. A single drop of water is filled with me. A water molecule is a team of two little hydrogen atoms holding hands with one big oxygen atom. The oxygen you need to breathe is a team of two oxygen atoms joined together. The smart people who study me are called chemists. They learn all my secret recipes to create amazing things for you. They can make medicines to help you feel better when you are sick, strong materials to build houses and cars, and even the bright colors in your crayons. I am one of the most important building blocks in the whole universe. By understanding me, you can understand how the world works and even help build a better, more wonderful future for everyone.
