The story

The Seed's Big Adventure

Have you ever seen a fluffy white seed floating on the wind. It looks like a tiny parachute. Or have you ever found a sticky little seed stuck to your sock after a walk. That was me, helping that little seed go on a big adventure. I send seeds flying on the breeze like little airplanes. I help them float on the water like tiny boats. I even help them hitch a ride on a fuzzy animal's fur. It is my special job to help seeds travel to new places. I am Seed Dispersal, and I help new plants grow everywhere.

I have so many wonderful helpers. The wind is one of my best friends. Whoosh. It blows dandelion fluff high in the air so it can find a new home. Water is a great helper, too. It can carry a big, round coconut all the way to a new island to grow a new palm tree. Animals are my helpers, and they are so much fun. A little bird might eat a yummy red berry and then fly far, far away, dropping the seed in a new spot. A busy squirrel buries a crunchy acorn to save for later but sometimes forgets where. Soon, a mighty oak tree starts to grow from that forgotten acorn. People have been my helpers for a very long time, since around 10,000 BCE, when early farmers learned to save the best seeds to grow their own food.

My job is very important. Without me, big green forests couldn't spread, and we wouldn't have fields full of yummy strawberries or crunchy carrots. I help make sure there are new flowers for the bees and new trees for the birds to build nests in. The next time you see a tiny green sprout pushing up from the dirt, you can think of me. You can imagine the amazing journey its seed took to get there. I am always working, quietly and secretly, to help make our world more green and beautiful, one tiny seed at a time.
