The story

The Secret Traveler

Have you ever blown on a fluffy white dandelion and watched hundreds of tiny parachutes float away on the breeze. Or have you ever found a prickly little burr stuck to your sock after walking through a grassy field. Maybe you've seen a busy squirrel digging a hole to hide a perfect acorn, saving it for a snack but sometimes forgetting where it is. These are all my secret ways of traveling. I send precious cargo on amazing journeys, helping new life begin in surprising places. I am the invisible force that helps plants find new homes, and my name is Seed Dispersal.

Plants need my help because, with their roots stuck in the ground, they can’t just get up and walk to a new sunny spot. If all the seeds from a mommy plant fell right underneath her, they would be too crowded and wouldn't have enough sunlight or water to grow big and strong. So, I step in to help. I am very, very old. I started my work about 360 million years ago, when the very first plants with seeds appeared on Earth. That’s even before the dinosaurs. The wind and rivers were my first helpers, but soon I had amazing partners. Animals are some of my best helpers. A big bear might eat delicious berries, and the tiny seeds inside travel safely through its tummy. When the seeds come out, they land in a new place far away, with a little bit of fertilizer to help them grow. Much, much later, people became my partners, too. Around 10,000 BCE, early farmers figured out they could save the best seeds from the tastiest plants. They started planting these seeds themselves, which was the beginning of farming, also called agriculture. They helped me spread plants for food all across the world.

Because of me, our world is covered in green forests, colorful wildflower meadows, and gardens full of yummy food. When a big fire burns down a forest, I am one of the first to arrive, bringing seeds on the wind or with birds to help new trees sprout from the ashes. Every single time you crunch into a sweet red apple, sit in the cool shade of a giant maple tree, or see a bright yellow sunflower, you are seeing my work. A little seed had to travel to that exact spot, sometimes from very far away, to grow into the plant you see today. So the next time you find a perfect dandelion puff, make a big wish and blow. You’ll be one of my special helpers, sending tiny adventurers on a brand new journey. You are helping me make the world a more beautiful and delicious place.
