The story

The Secret Helper

Have you ever seen a little clownfish snuggling in the wavy arms of a sea anemone. Or a busy bee diving into a bright flower for a sweet drink. They are helping each other. The little fish gets a safe home, and the bee helps the flower make new seeds. I am the secret helper that brings them together. I help animals and plants work as a team, like best buddies sharing a big adventure. I show them how to be great partners.

Are you wondering who I am. My name is Symbiosis. It’s a big word that means 'living together'. For a very long time, people saw me helping creatures, but they didn't have a name for me. Then, a kind scientist named Heinrich Anton de Bary gave me my name in the year 1879. He saw how I helped tiny fungi and algae snuggle up on rocks to become something new, called a lichen. He thought this friendship was so amazing that it needed a special name. And so, he called me Symbiosis.

Now you can find me everywhere. I am in the big zebra that lets a little bird eat pesky bugs off its back. The bird gets a yummy lunch, and the zebra gets to be comfy and clean. I am a reminder that we are all stronger when we help one another. When you share your toys or give a friend a hug, you are being a helper, just like me. Being together is the best adventure of all.
