The story

The Promise That Hugs the World

Have you ever seen a castle so tall it tickles the clouds. Or a forest so green and full of amazing animals. Some places in our world are extra special. They can be colorful coral reefs deep in the ocean or ancient cities built a long, long time ago. I am like a big, warm hug that wraps around these wonderful places to keep them safe. I am a special promise that says, 'You are important to everyone in the whole world.'

My story starts with a giant rescue. Long ago, in a country called Egypt, there were two beautiful, giant temples called Abu Simbel. But oh no. A new lake was coming, and the temples were about to be covered with water. In 1959, people from all over the world decided to help. They worked together like a super team to carefully move the giant temples, piece by piece, to higher ground where they would be safe. Everyone was so happy they saved the temples. This gave them a brilliant idea. On November 16th, 1972, they made a worldwide promise to always work together to protect our planet’s most amazing treasures.

That promise is me. My name is UNESCO World Heritage Site. When a place gets my special title, it’s like getting a gold star for the whole world to see. It means that place is a gift for you, for me, and for every child who will come after us. From the Great Wall of China to the big canyons in America, I help make sure these wonders are protected forever. So, we can all visit them, learn from them, and share their beauty for many, many years to come.
