The story

The World's Special Promise

Have you ever found a beautiful seashell on the beach or a colorful feather in the park that you wanted to keep safe forever. I'm a little like that, but for the whole world. I am a special promise that people make to protect the most amazing places on Earth. I am a giant hug that the world gives to its most wonderful treasures, like ancient cities made of stone, deep forests filled with rare animals, and buildings so beautiful they look like they are from a fairy tale. I make sure these places are safe so that everyone, including you, can enjoy them. My name is UNESCO World Heritage Site, and I am here to protect our planet's wonders.

My story begins with a big problem in Egypt. A long time ago, in the 1950s, people were building a huge dam called the Aswan High Dam. The dam was important, but it was going to create a giant lake that would flood and hide some incredible ancient temples called Abu Simbel forever. These temples had giant statues and were thousands of years old. People from all over the world heard about this and said, 'We have to save them.'. So, starting in 1959, countries worked together on an amazing rescue mission. They carefully cut the giant temples into huge blocks, like a puzzle, and moved them to higher, safer ground. It was a huge success. This teamwork gave everyone a brilliant idea. If people could work together to save one special place, why not protect all the special places in the world. So, on November 16th, 1972, many countries gathered in Paris, France, and agreed to create me. They made a special list of places so precious that the whole world should help protect them. In 1978, the very first places were put on my list, like the amazing animals of the Galápagos Islands and the bubbling geysers of Yellowstone National Park.

Today, I am like a superhero's shield for more than a thousand places all around the globe. I help protect the Great Wall of China, the colorful Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and even whole cities where people lived hundreds of years ago. When you visit a place and see my special symbol, it’s a sign that this place tells an important story about our Earth or the people who have lived here. It means this place belongs to everyone in the world—including you. I am a reminder that we are all one big family, living together on our beautiful planet. By working together to protect these treasures, we make sure they will be safe for many, many years, so that kids just like you can visit them, learn their stories, and dream about all the wonderful things in our world.
