Just want A Christmas Carol?
On a chilly, foggy night in London a very long time ago, the air smelled of coal smoke and roasting chestnuts from the street vendors below. Inside a cozy room, a man with a wild imagination and a very busy mind was dipping his special quill pen into a pot of dark ink. He was dreaming up a brand-new story, one filled with clanking chains, grumpy misers who only cared about money, and the joyful ringing of Christmas bells that echo through the city. I am that story, a little book with a big heart. I am not just any tale; I am a ghost story meant to fill you with wonder and warmth, not frights. My creator wanted my ghosts to be teachers, showing the way to a happier life. He wanted my pages to feel like a warm hug on a cold winter's night. My name is A Christmas Carol.
My creator was a wonderful and famous writer named Charles Dickens. In the autumn of 1843, he felt very worried when he walked through the streets of London and saw poor children who were cold and hungry. He wanted to write a story that would be like a powerful song, one that would remind everyone to be kind and generous, especially during the Christmas season. He worked so hard and wrote me very quickly, in just six weeks. He filled my pages with characters you would never forget: the grumpy Ebenezer Scrooge, who shouted 'Bah, humbug.'; his kind clerk Bob Cratchit, who loved his family more than anything; and three amazing spirits—the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. These ghosts were not there to scare Scrooge, but to teach him an important lesson about love. On December 19th, 1843, I was finally ready. I was published as a beautiful little book with a bright red cover and shiny gold lettering on the front. I looked like a special Christmas gift. As soon as I was in the bookshops, families bought me and gathered by their warm fires to read my words aloud. My story of Scrooge's amazing journey flew right into their hearts.

From that very first Christmas, people loved me. My story about Scrooge learning to share his money and love his neighbors helped make Christmas a bigger, happier holiday for everyone in England and beyond. People started celebrating with more joy, giving more gifts, and spending more time with their families. For over 150 years, I have been shared in countless ways. I have been turned into plays on big stages, movies on giant screens, and even cartoons for kids. Every time you hear someone say 'Bah, humbug.' when they are feeling grumpy, or when a character exclaims 'God bless us, every one.', you are hearing a little piece of me echo through time. I am more than just a book with paper pages. I am a reminder that the true spirit of Christmas is about kindness, and that it is never, ever too late to open your heart to others. I hope my story continues to make your holidays merry and bright for many, many years to come.
