I love the crisp rustle my pages make when they turn, and I love the secrets I hold inside. I am not made of stone or steel, but of special paper, ink, and wonderful, bright colors. I am filled with a rainbow of friends—a yellow duck, a blue horse, and a green frog. I ask a simple question on each page, and each animal friend answers with what they see next. My story began with two friends who had never even met. One was a writer named Bill Martin Jr. One day in 1966, while he was riding on a train, a rhythm popped into his head, like a little song. Chugga-chugga, chugga-chugga. 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?'. He wrote down the words, creating a bouncy, repeating question and answer that was super fun to say out loud. The other friend was an artist named Eric Carle. He had a very special way of making pictures. He would paint bright colors onto thin tissue paper, then cut out shapes and glue them together to create his art. This is called a collage. When Bill saw a picture Eric had made of a red lobster in a magazine, he knew he had found the perfect person to bring my animals to life. Together, their words and pictures made me who I am. I was finally published for all the world to see in 1967.

From the very beginning, children loved chanting my words and pointing to my colorful pages. My simple, repeating sentences made it easy for them to guess what was coming next, and soon they felt like they were reading all by themselves. That is a wonderful feeling. I helped them learn their colors and the names of different animals in a fun, playful way. For decades, I have been shared in classrooms, libraries, and at bedtime, snuggled between cozy blankets. Even though I was created many years ago, new friends open my pages every single day. I am a happy reminder that a simple story with bright, cheerful pictures can bring people together, and that the world is full of amazing things to see if you just look around.
