The story

I Am a Tower of People

The air buzzes with excitement in a sunny town square in Catalonia, Spain. I can hear the sharp, festive music of pipes called gralles and the roar of a giant crowd. Then, I feel a strange and wonderful sensation. I begin to rise. I am not made of cold stone or heavy wood. I am made of living, breathing people. My foundation is built from hundreds of strong hands and sturdy shoulders, all pressing together. I grow taller and taller, a tower of humans reaching for the bright blue sky. The crowd holds its breath as I sway gently, a single column of trust and teamwork. My name is known throughout this land. I am a Castell.

My story began a long, long time ago, in the late 18th century, in a town called Valls. I wasn’t planned by an architect; I grew out of lively folk dances where people started climbing on each other's shoulders for fun. The people who build me are called castellers, and they follow a very special motto that guides their every move: 'Força, Equilibri, Valor i Seny'. This means 'Strength, Balance, Courage, and Common Sense'. It’s the perfect recipe for creating something as amazing as me. Can you imagine stacking people nine or ten levels high without any nets or machines? That’s what they do. I have different parts, just like a tree. My base is called the pinya, a huge, tight huddle of hundreds of people that supports all the weight. They are my strong roots, keeping me from falling. The main part of me is the tronc, or trunk, where layers of castellers stand carefully on the shoulders of those below them. At the very top is the pom de dalt, the crown, made up of the smallest and lightest children. The bravest of them all is the enxaneta, a little climber who scrambles to the very peak, balances for a moment, and raises one hand with four fingers outstretched. That simple gesture signals our success, and the crowd erupts in a deafening cheer.

To the people who build me, I am much more than just a spectacular tower. I am a symbol of their community. Every single person in the colla, which is the name for the casteller team, has a critical job to do. It doesn't matter if you are the strongest person anchoring the pinya or the lightest enxaneta at the top; without you, I cannot stand. Building me requires perfect trust. The climbers must trust the people below them to hold steady, and the people in the base must trust the climbers to be careful and quick. Different towns have their own colles, and they practice for months, becoming like a second family. They compete at festivals to see who can build the tallest and most complicated versions of me. All the while, the music of the gralles fills the air. It’s not just for entertainment. The melody is a special code that tells the climbers when it’s time to climb, when to hold still, and when it’s time to carefully come apart. The music is my heartbeat, guiding every step of my creation and my gentle disassembly.

I am not an ancient monument you can only read about in books or see in a museum. I am a living, breathing tradition, built again and again in bustling plazas filled with cheering families and wide-eyed visitors. My spirit of unity and courage is so special that on November 16th, 2010, I was recognized by a group called UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That means I am considered a special treasure for all people, everywhere, to know about and protect. Every time a colla comes together, they are not just building a tower; they are showing the world what is possible when people support one another. I am a tower of dreams, a beautiful, swaying reminder that when we lift each other up, we really can touch the sky.
