The story

The Tower of Friends

I wiggle and I sway. Up, up, up I go. Happy music plays below. People cheer and clap their hands. I am reaching for the bright, blue sky. I am not made of blocks or bricks. I am made of friends holding each other tight. What kind of tower am I? Can you guess?

I am a Castell. A human tower. I am made of many, many friends. My friends are called a 'colla,' and we are a big family. A long, long time ago, in the 18th century, my friends first built me in a sunny place in Spain called Catalonia. To make me strong, lots of friends stand at the bottom. They make my base, called the 'pinya'. The pinya is like the strong roots of a giant tree. They hold me steady so I don't wobble or fall down. We all work together to stand up tall and strong.

The most exciting part is when the littlest climber goes up. Up, up, up they climb, all the way to the very top of my head. This brave little friend is called the 'enxaneta'. When the enxaneta reaches the very top, they give a little wave with their hand. Hooray. We did it. On November 16th, 2010, everyone in the whole world said I was very special. I show that when we all help each other and work as a team, we can reach for the sky and do amazing things.
