The story

The Story of a Promise

Hello. Before I was words written on paper, I was a big, hopeful idea. I was a feeling of sunshine in a very sad time. The whole country was like a puzzle with missing pieces, and many wonderful people were not free. They couldn't run and play wherever they wanted. A very important promise was needed to help bring everyone together again. I am that special promise, written down with love for all to see. I am the Emancipation Proclamation. I am a promise of freedom.

A kind and thoughtful president named Abraham Lincoln brought me to life. He knew it was time for a big, happy change. On a chilly winter day, January 1st, 1863, he sat down at his big wooden desk. He picked up his special pen with ink as dark as the night sky. His hand was a little bit shaky because he knew these words were so very important. He wrote my words very carefully, making each letter neat and strong. My words were a message of love. They said that many people who were not free should now be as free as birds in the sky. They could finally soar and be happy. It was a powerful message that would change everything, just like a magic key unlocking a giant, heavy door to a beautiful garden.

My words traveled across the land like a happy song. People heard the news and their hearts felt full of light. I was a big step toward making the country a place where everyone could be safe and free, a place where all children could grow up with big dreams. Even today, I remind people that kind and brave words have power. They can change the world and make it a better, more hopeful place for you, for me, and for everyone.
