Just want Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus?
Before I had a cover or pages, I was an idea, flickering like a candle on a dark and stormy night. Imagine a cozy house by a great big lake in Switzerland, with rain drumming on the windows. It was the summer of 1816, a year so chilly they called it the 'Year Without a Summer.'. Inside, a group of friends decided to tell spooky stories to pass the time. A brand new, thrilling, and thoughtful idea was born in the mind of a very clever young woman. I am that idea, turned into a book. My name is Frankenstein.
My creator was a teenager named Mary Shelley. She was brilliant and full of imagination. During that rainy summer of 1816, she, her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their famous friend Lord Byron challenged each other to write the best ghost story. One night, Mary had a waking dream about a scientist who created a living being. The idea was so powerful that it became me. She spent months writing my story, filling my pages with adventure, science, and very big feelings. On January 1st, 1818, I was finally published as a book for the whole world to read, though at first, nobody knew a young woman had written me.
My story is about a scientist named Victor Frankenstein and the creature he brings to life. For over 200 years, people have read my pages and seen my story in movies and plays. Sometimes people think I'm just a scary monster story, but I'm really about so much more. I ask important questions, like 'What does it mean to be a friend?' and 'Why is it important to be kind to people, even if they look different?'. I show that what's on the inside is what truly matters. I love that I still inspire people to think, to create their own stories, and to remember that the greatest magic of all is a kind and understanding heart.
