The story

Heidi: The Story of a Girl from the Alps

Can you imagine waking up to air so crisp and clean it tingles on your cheeks? Can you hear the gentle clanging of goat bells echoing across green valleys and smell the sharp, fresh scent of pine trees? This is the world I come from, a place of towering mountains and bright blue skies. It is the home of a happy, free-spirited girl with a big heart who loves running barefoot through fields of wildflowers. You might think I am that girl, but I am something else. I am a story, written on paper but alive in your imagination. My name is Heidi.

My life began in the heart and mind of a wonderful woman named Johanna Spyri. She lived in a beautiful country called Switzerland and loved the mountains just as much as the characters in my pages. Johanna had a special wish. She wanted to create a story that would show everyone how the fresh mountain air, true kindness, and loyal friendship could make anyone feel happy and strong. So, she began writing my adventure, publishing my first part on December 1st, 1880, and the second part on April 14th, 1881. Inside my pages, she created a whole world for you to visit. You’ll meet me, Heidi, a cheerful girl who is sent to live with her quiet grandfather, who everyone in the village calls the Alm-Uncle. You’ll also get to know my best friend, Peter the goatherd, who leaps across the mountains with his flock every day. And you cannot forget my dear friend, Clara Sesemann, a girl who lived in a big city called Frankfurt. Clara was unable to walk, but when she visited my mountain home, she discovered a strength she never knew she had.

When I was first printed as a book, I was just a stack of pages with a simple cover. But soon, families in Switzerland and Germany began to read my words aloud by their fireplaces. Children would listen with wide eyes as they heard about my life in the Alps. It wasn't long before my story was packed into suitcases and sailed across vast oceans. My German words were carefully changed into English, French, Japanese, and more than fifty other languages. Can you believe it? Suddenly, children in busy cities and quiet towns all over the world knew about my home in the Swiss Alps. I became a window to a world of snowy peaks and green meadows, and people who had never seen a mountain dreamed of drinking fresh goat's milk and sleeping on a bed of hay. Over the years, artists drew beautiful pictures of me, and filmmakers turned my words into movies and cartoons, bringing my mountain home to life for new friends everywhere.

It has been more than 140 years since Johanna Spyri first wrote my words, but I feel as young and full of energy as ever. I think it’s because the things that matter most in my story are timeless treasures. My pages whisper a secret that is always true: finding joy in simple things, caring for your friends, and spending time in nature can make your heart feel full. You don’t need fancy toys or big castles to be happy. All you need is a friend to trust, a beautiful sunset to watch, and a kind heart. So, whenever you see me on a bookshelf, know that I am waiting for you, ready to take you on an adventure to the Alps and remind you that kindness is the greatest treasure of all.
