The story

My Story in Pictures

Have you ever held a story in your hands. I am a world made of paper and ink, filled with bold black lines and big, expressive eyes that can show you if someone is happy, surprised, or ready for an adventure. When you open me up, you might hear the soft rustle of my pages turning. But here’s a secret, you have to read me in a special way. Instead of starting on the left like most books, your journey with me begins on the right. You follow my pictures from panel to panel, watching characters run with a ‘whoosh’ and seeing their feelings in giant speech bubbles. You can see whole worlds inside me, from magical kingdoms to futuristic cities with flying cars. I am Manga, the picture stories of Japan.

My story is very, very long. It began a long, long time ago, back in the 12th century, even before your great-great-great-great-grandparents were born. My earliest ancestors were funny animal scrolls called Chōjū-giga. They showed silly pictures of frogs and rabbits wrestling and acting like people. For hundreds of years, artists in Japan drew stories with pictures. Then, around the year 1814, an amazing artist named Katsushika Hokusai came along. He made books full of what he called ‘whimsical pictures,’ which means playful and funny drawings. It was he who first gave me my name, Manga. But my life really changed because of a man called Osamu Tezuka, who many people call the ‘God of Manga’. After a big, sad war ended in the year 1945, he wanted to create stories that would give people hope and make them smile again. On April 3rd, 1952, he introduced the world to a powerful robot boy with a kind heart named Astro Boy. Astro Boy’s adventures showed that even after sad times, there could be bravery and friendship. Osamu Tezuka’s style, with big cinematic action and deep feelings, helped me become the exciting storyteller I am today.

At first, my stories were mostly for children in Japan. But soon, people all over the world wanted to read about my heroes, laugh at my funny characters, and explore my amazing worlds. My stories are not just for one kind of person, they are for everyone, no matter how old you are or where you live. Sometimes, my pictures and characters love adventure so much that they can’t stay on the page. They jump right out of my books and become colorful, moving cartoons you can watch on a screen. You might know these as anime. I am so happy that my drawings can travel across the world, sharing tales of courage, friendship, and imagination. I connect people through the language of pictures, which everyone can understand. And maybe, just maybe, I can inspire you to pick up a pencil and share your own wonderful stories, too.
