Just want Moai?
On a little green island in the middle of a big, blue ocean, I watch the world go by. The warm sun feels like a soft blanket on my stone face, and the wind whispers secrets in my big ears. I am very tall and very strong, with a long nose and quiet lips. I don't move, but I see everything. I am a Moai, a giant stone guardian watching over my island home.
A long, long time ago, between the years 1250 and 1500, the clever Rapa Nui people made me. They found a special mountain made of soft volcanic rock and began to tap, tap, tap with their tools. They carved my eyes, my nose, and my chin right out of the mountain. Then came the hard part. They worked together, using ropes and logs, to carefully and slowly move me all the way across the island to my special spot. They made me to look over their villages and keep their families safe, like a friendly stone grandpa.
My creators are gone now, but I am still here. I watch the sun rise every morning and the stars twinkle every night. People from all over the world travel across the big blue ocean to visit me. They look up at my tall face and wonder about the Rapa Nui people who made me. I am a reminder of how clever and strong people can be, and I will keep watching over my beautiful island forever, sharing its story with everyone who comes to say hello.
