Just want Pizza Margherita?
I start as a soft, round pillow of dough. A bright red blanket of sweet tomato sauce is spread all over me. Sprinkles of soft, white cheese dot my face like fluffy clouds. Then, little green leaves that smell like sunshine are placed on top. I feel so warm and bubbly, and I smell like a yummy garden. What am I?
I am the Pizza Margherita. I was born in a sunny city called Naples, in Italy. A kind pizza maker named Raffaele Esposito created me on a special day in June of 1889. A real queen, Queen Margherita, was visiting, and he wanted to make something just for her. He looked at the Italian flag with its beautiful red, white, and green stripes. He decided to make me look just like it. He used the red tomatoes, the white mozzarella cheese, and the green basil to make a pizza that looked like a flag you could eat.
The queen loved me. She thought I was the most delicious pizza she had ever tasted. After that, everyone wanted to try the pizza made for a queen. Soon, I traveled from Naples all around the world. Today, children and grown-ups everywhere share me with their families and friends. I am a simple, happy food that reminds everyone of a beautiful flag and the joy of sharing a warm, delicious meal together.
