Just want Pizza Margherita?
Imagine the cozy feeling of a warm oven and the delicious smell of baking bread filling the air. That’s where my story begins. I am a perfectly round, flat circle, and I wear the most beautiful colors. I have a bright red sauce made from sweet tomatoes, melted white cheese that looks like puffy clouds, and little green leaves scattered on top that smell like a garden. Just looking at me makes people smile and their tummies rumble with excitement. I am a Pizza Margherita, and I am a famous and delicious taste of Italy.
My special story began a long, long time ago in a sunny city called Naples, in Italy. It was the summer of 1889, and two very important people were visiting the city: a king named Umberto I and a queen named Margherita of Savoy. A famous pizza maker, or pizzaiolo, named Raffaele Esposito wanted to create something wonderful just for them. He had an idea as colorful as a flag. He decided to make me with toppings that looked just like the colors of the Italian flag. He used red tomatoes, white mozzarella cheese, and green basil leaves. On June 11th, 1889, he proudly presented me to the queen. She tried other pizzas, but she loved my simple, fresh taste the very best. Because she enjoyed me so much, I was named 'Margherita' in her honor.
After the queen decided I was her favorite, I became famous. First, everyone in Naples wanted to try me. Then, people all over Italy heard about me. Soon, my story and my delicious taste traveled across the big ocean to faraway places, and I made new friends everywhere I went. I showed the whole world that sometimes, the most simple things can be the most wonderful. Today, you can find me in pizzerias all over the globe, from small towns to big cities. Every time you take a warm, cheesy bite, you are tasting a piece of history. You are tasting a story about a clever chef, a kind queen, and a country's flag. I am a happy reminder that a little bit of creativity can bring a lot of joy to the world, one slice at a time.
