Abraham Lincoln's Special Words
Hello there. My name is Abraham Lincoln, and a long, long time ago, I had a very important job. I was the president of a big country. Being president was a big job, but it was also a very sad time. Our country was like a great big family, but the family was not getting along. Some parts of our family wanted one thing, and other parts wanted something different. This disagreement made everyone feel sad and worried. It was like when you and a friend can't agree on what game to play, and it makes your heart feel heavy. I wanted so much for our country-family to be friends again. I knew we had to work hard to make everyone feel happy and together in our home.
In a small town called Gettysburg, something very important happened. It was during the warm summer, on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the year 1863. It was a very loud and very sad time there. A lot of people had to be very, very brave, more brave than they had ever been before. Even though it was a time of big disagreement, I always held onto a little bit of hope in my heart. I hoped that our country could heal, like when you get a scrape on your knee and it gets all better. I dreamed that our country could become one big, happy family again, where everyone was kind and helped one another. I wanted everyone to feel safe and loved in our big country home.
After some time passed, I took a trip to visit that special town, Gettysburg. I went there to talk to everyone and to share some words that came right from my heart. My speech was very, very short, shorter than a bedtime story. I wanted to help everyone remember the brave people who were there. I also wanted us all to make a promise. A promise to work together to make our country a kind and happy home for every single person. I wanted us to be a family that was strong and full of love. I grew old and passed away, but my biggest wish was that our country would always remember to be good friends and one big, united family.
