Just want Festa Junina?
Hello there. My name is Orville Wright, and I want to tell you about a very special day. My brother Wilbur and I had a big dream. We watched birds soar through the sky and thought, "Maybe people can fly, too." We had a little shop where we fixed bicycles, but in our free time, we built something new. It was a flying machine. We called it the Flyer. We made it with wood and cloth, and it had long, wide wings, just like a bird's. When it was all finished, we took our special machine to a windy, sandy place called Kitty Hawk. We hoped the wind would help lift our Flyer into the air.
On December 17th, 1903, the wind was blowing just right. It was a chilly day, but my brother and I were too excited to notice. We decided to toss a coin to see who would get to try flying first. Guess what. I won. I felt a little bit nervous, but I was also so happy. I lay down on the bottom wing of the Flyer. The engine started with a loud, sleepy rumble. RUMBLE. RUMBLE. Then, with a whoosh, we started moving along a track on the sand. The Flyer went faster and faster. Suddenly, the ground disappeared from under me. I was flying. For 12 whole seconds, I was really, truly flying through the air.
Our Flyer landed gently back on the soft sand. It was a very short ride, but it was the most wonderful ride of my life. My brother Wilbur came running over with a big smile on his face. We cheered and jumped for joy because we did it. We showed everyone that people could fly. That little flight was just the beginning of something amazing. Our dream helped create all the big airplanes that fly in the sky today, taking people on exciting adventures all around the world.
