Just want Festa Junina?
Olá, everyone. My name is Chico, and I’m a farmer here in the sunny countryside of Brazil. I want to tell you about my favorite time of year, the month of June. When June arrives, the air gets filled with excitement because it’s time for Festa Junina, which means the June Festival. It’s a huge party we have every year to say thank you for all the wonderful food that grows in our fields, especially the yummy, sweet corn. My whole village gets ready for the big celebration. We build a special party place called an 'arraial' right in the middle of town. It’s like a magical fairground that pops up just for the festival. Everyone is smiling and getting their dancing shoes ready. Would you like to come to my arraial and see what it’s all about? I promise it’s the most fun you’ll have all year.
As soon as you step into the arraial, you’ll see rows and rows of colorful paper flags, called 'bandeirinhas', zigzagging above your head. They flutter in the breeze like happy little rainbows. In the center, there is a giant bonfire, which we call a 'fogueira'. It crackles and pops, sending warm, orange light all around and keeping us cozy as the evening gets cool. The air smells so good. You can smell sweet popcorn popping and corn on the cob roasting over the fire. My favorite treat is a slice of 'bolo de fubá', a delicious corn cake my grandmother makes. There are so many fun things to do. You can play 'pescaria', a fishing game where you use a little pole to catch a toy fish and win a prize. Everyone dresses up in special 'caipira', or country-style, clothes. I wear my best checkered shirt, jeans with colorful patches, and a straw hat. You’ll hear lively music called forró playing everywhere, with accordions, triangles, and drums that make you want to dance. The best part of the night is when we all do the 'quadrilha'. It’s a big group dance that’s like a play. We all follow a caller who shouts out the steps. The dance tells a funny story about a country wedding. It’s so much fun to stomp your feet and twirl with all your friends.

A Festa Junina is more than just games and food. It’s a special time for us to honor saints who we believe help bring the rain for our crops, like Saint John, whose special day is June 24th. But the most important part of the festival is that it brings everyone together. My family, my friends, and all of our neighbors gather around the bonfire to talk, laugh, and share stories. We celebrate the good harvest and our friendship with one another. It’s a time to be thankful for the earth that gives us food and for the people we love. The spirit of Festa Junina is all about sharing joy and being a good neighbor, and that is a wonderful reason to have a party. I hope one day you can feel that happiness, too.
