The story

Emiliano Zapata and the Seeds of Hope

Hello, my name is Emiliano Zapata. I lived in a beautiful place in Mexico called Morelos. The sun was warm, and the corn grew tall. But something wasn't quite right. Many of my friends worked so hard in the fields all day long, but they didn't have any land of their own. A leader named Porfirio Díaz had been in charge for a very, very long time. It didn't feel fair. I knew in my heart that it was time for a change, a time for everyone to be treated with kindness and have a chance to be happy.

A friend named Francisco Madero called for a big change to start on November 20th, 1910. This was the beginning of the Mexican Revolution. It sounds like a big, scary word, but really, it was about helping people. I had an important idea I shared with my friends and neighbors. I would say, '¡Tierra y Libertad.'. That means 'Land and Liberty.'. We wanted every family to have their own little piece of land to grow food and build a home. And we wanted everyone to be free to make their own choices. So, we all came together. We weren't angry fighters. We were hopeful helpers, working together to make our home a fairer place for our children and for all the children to come. We wanted to plant gardens of our own.

Working together for a long time was hard, but we never gave up hope. And guess what. We made a big, wonderful change. We helped create a new set of rules for our whole country called the Constitution of 1917. The most important rule said that the land should belong to the people who work on it. It was like planting a tiny seed and watching it grow into a strong tree that gives fruit to everyone. I passed away a long time ago, but I am happy we planted those seeds of hope for a new Mexico, a place where every family could have their own home and their own garden, and live happily and freely.
