The story

A New Deal for Everyone

Hello there. My name is Franklin D. Roosevelt, but many people called me FDR. I was the president a long, long time ago, during the 1930s. It was a very sad time in our country, which we called the Great Depression. Many grown-ups lost their jobs, which meant they didn't have money to buy food or pay for their homes. I saw so many worried faces, and it made my heart feel heavy. I knew I had to do something big. I promised everyone that I would make a plan to help. A plan to bring back the smiles and give everyone hope again. It was my most important job.

So, I came up with a big plan and called it the New Deal. It was like a promise to every person that we would work together to make things better. The New Deal created lots of new jobs for people. Imagine going outside to help our country. Some friends joined something called the Civilian Conservation Corps, where they got to plant millions of tiny trees that grew up to be big, strong forests. Others helped build amazing things. They built strong bridges to cross rivers and sturdy schools where children could learn. It was wonderful to see people busy and working again. They were earning money to take care of their families, and they felt proud and happy.

Because of our New Deal, people started to feel hopeful again. The sad, worried faces turned into smiling, happy faces. Families could sit down for dinner and not worry so much. We learned a very important lesson. We learned that when we all work together and help our neighbors, we can solve even the biggest problems. Helping each other makes everyone stronger. That was the most important part of our plan, and it made our country a better place for everyone.
