Lily's Great Journey West
Hello there. My name is Lily, and I want to tell you about a big adventure my family went on a long, long time ago, back in the year 1845. We had a special home on wheels called a covered wagon. It had a big cloth top that looked like a puffy white cloud. My papa said we were going on a very long trip called the Oregon Trail. We were going to find a new home in a place called the West. He said there was so much land there that I could run and run and never stop. I was so excited to see our new home. I packed my favorite dolly and waved goodbye to our little house. Our big adventure was just beginning, and I couldn't wait to see what we would find.
Our covered wagon was like a little, wobbly house. As we traveled, it went bump, bump, bump along the trail. I liked listening to the sound of our big oxen's feet going clop, clop, clop on the dirt. Some days, I would peek out of the wagon and see amazing things. One time, I saw big, fuzzy animals called bison. They had shaggy brown fur and looked so strong. At night, there were no lights like in a city, so the sky was full of sparkly, twinkling stars. It felt like we were sleeping under a giant, glittery blanket. One day, we had to cross a wide, splashy river. Our wagon went right into the water. It was a little scary, but it was also fun. It felt like a ride. Our journey was long, but every day was a new adventure for me and my family.
After many, many days of traveling, we finally arrived. I looked out and saw more green land and bigger blue skies than I had ever seen before. This was our new home. Papa said we would build our own house out of wood from the tall trees. Mama said we would plant a garden with yummy carrots and peas. I knew we would meet other families who also made the long trip. We would all work together to build a new town with new friends. I felt so happy and hopeful. Our long journey was over, and we had found our place. My family helped build a new community in the West, and it all started with one big adventure in our wobbly wagon house.
