The story

My Day of the Kings

Hello! I am a special day called Epiphany. In France, many people know me as the Fête des Rois. This means “Festival of the Kings.” People celebrate me in January, after the new year begins. My celebration is a time to remember a Christian story about three wise kings. The story tells how they followed a bright star in the sky. The star guided them on a long trip to visit the baby Jesus.

In France, one of my most popular traditions is sharing a special cake called the “galette des rois.” That name means the king’s cake. It is a round, flat cake that looks like a big, golden cookie. It has a flaky crust and a sweet, yummy filling. Families and friends gather together to cut the cake and share the slices. It is a happy and delicious way for people to celebrate me together.

My cake also holds a fun secret! Before the cake is baked, a tiny surprise called a “fève” is hidden inside. A fève is a very small toy, and it can be shaped like an animal, a flower, or a little person. As each person gets their slice of the galette des rois, they look very carefully. Everyone is excited to see who will find the hidden fève in their piece.

To make sure the game is fair for everyone, the youngest child in the family often has an important job. That child hides under the table and calls out which person gets each slice of cake. When someone finds the fève, they are the winner! They get to be the king or queen for the day and wear a special paper crown. It is a fun game that makes my day special for families.
