Just want Las Posadas - Mexican?
Hello! I am a special celebration called Las Posadas. My name means “The Inns.” I help people get ready for Christmas. I do this by remembering the story of Mary and Joseph from a long time ago. They traveled a long way to find a safe and cozy room, called an inn, before baby Jesus was born. My traditions help tell their story.
For nine nights, people celebrate me with special walking parades. These are called processions. Children and grown-ups walk together from house to house in the evening. They carry candles that light up the night. While they walk, they sing special songs. In the processions, the people pretend to be Mary and Joseph asking for a place to stay. They are acting out the story of that long journey.
After all the walking and singing, there is a fun party! Everyone goes inside to get warm and celebrate together. People share yummy food, like tamales and sweet bread. For many children, the best part of the party is the piñata. The piñata is often shaped like a big, colorful star and is full of surprises. Children try to break it open. When the piñata breaks, lots of candy and treats fall out for everyone to share. This is how people celebrate me each night, by remembering an important story with parades and parties.
