The story

Nyepi: A Day of Silence

Hello! I am Nyepi, the Balinese New Year. I am a special time for people in Bali to have a fresh start. It is a time to make everything clean and new for the year ahead. Before my quietest day, there are exciting things to see and do. People have special ceremonies called Melasti. These rituals are for purification, which is like making your heart feel clean and bright.

The day before my quiet time is very noisy and fun! Many people join a big parade. For this parade, they build huge statues called Ogoh-ogoh. The Ogoh-ogoh look like amazing, and sometimes silly, monsters from old stories. They might have big eyes and wild hair. People work together to make them colorful and fantastic. Then, they carry these giant statues through the streets, making lots of noise with music. This parade is believed to clear away any bad feelings, making way for good things in the new year.

After all the noise and excitement, my most important part begins. It is the Day of Silence. For one whole day, the entire island of Bali becomes very, very quiet. Everyone stays inside their homes with their families. People follow four special rules to help make the world peaceful. They do not use fire or turn on lights, so everything is calm and dark at night. They also do not work.

During my quiet day, no one travels on the roads, and there is no entertainment like playing loud games. It is a time for everyone to be still and think. This great quiet helps people feel rested and ready for the new year. By being peaceful together, they welcome a clean start. It is a beautiful way to begin the year with a calm heart and a peaceful world.
