The story

I Am the Sinulog Festival

Hello! I am the Sinulog Festival. I am a very bright and lively celebration that takes place in the Philippines, in a place called Cebu City. Every year, people gather to observe me. My main purpose is to honor a very special statue. This statue is of the child Jesus, and it is known as the Santo Niño. My celebration is full of music, dancing, and amazing colors, all to show respect and happiness for the Santo Niño.

My history began a very long time ago, in the year 1521. A famous explorer from Europe, named Ferdinand Magellan, sailed to the island of Cebu. When he arrived, he met the leaders of the island, including Queen Juana. As a special gift of friendship, he gave her the statue of the Santo Niño. This small statue is very important because it is considered the oldest Christian object in the entire country of the Philippines. The deep respect and devotion people have for this historical statue is the reason I exist today.

One of the most special parts of my celebration is my dance. My name, Sinulog, actually comes from a local word that means 'like the water's current.' This name perfectly describes the unique dance that people perform. The dancers move with a special rhythm. They take two steps forward and then one step back, over and over again. This movement looks like the flowing water in a river. The dance is performed to the powerful sound of loud drums that fill the air with energy. The dancers wear beautiful, bright costumes covered in feathers and sparkling decorations, making the streets look like a rainbow.

As they dance, many performers hold their own statues of the Santo Niño, lifting them high in the air. This dance is a form of prayer and celebration. Today, people observe me with a huge festival that lasts for nine whole days. The biggest and most exciting day is the third Sunday of January, when the Grand Parade happens. Thousands and thousands of people come to Cebu City to be part of the celebration. They line the streets to watch the groups of dancers in their incredible costumes. While watching the parade and celebrating, many people will shout 'Pit Señor!' This is a special phrase that asks the Santo Niño for blessings and help in their lives. It is a joyful sound that is heard all throughout the city during my celebration.
