The story

I Am Vesak

Hello, my name is Vesak. For millions of Buddhists living all over the world, I am their most important and sacred holiday. My date is special because it is not the same every year. Instead of following a calendar with fixed dates, people look to the sky to know when to observe me. My celebrations take place on the day of the full moon during the fifth or sixth month of the Buddhist lunar calendar. This special time usually happens in the month of May or sometimes in June on the calendar you might use at school. On this bright, moonlit night, people come together to honor important events.

My purpose is to help people remember one very important person. His name was Siddhartha Gautama, and he was a man who lived a long time ago. Through his teachings and wisdom, he became known as the Buddha. I am a day for honoring three of the most significant moments in his life. First, people remember his birth. Then, they remember his enlightenment. Enlightenment is a special word that means the moment he gained a very deep and true understanding of life. Finally, my day is also a time to remember his passing away. By remembering all three events on a single day, I help people reflect on his entire life and his teachings.

When my day arrives, many families and friends gather at Buddhist temples to observe me together. The temples are often filled with peaceful sounds as people listen to teachings shared by monks. They might also chant special verses and prayers. It is a custom for people to bring offerings to the temple, such as beautiful flowers, glowing candles, and fragrant incense. One of my most beloved traditions is the bathing of a statue of the baby Buddha. People gently pour scented water or sweet tea over the small statue. This act is a way to remember a special story about the Buddha’s birth. To show purity and respect, many people choose to wear white clothes. They also eat only vegetarian food, which means they do not eat any meat, as a way to show kindness to all animals.

At the heart of my observance is a message of peace, kindness, and compassion for everyone. You can see this message in the beautiful decorations that appear in homes and along streets. People hang colorful flags that flutter in the breeze. As evening comes, they light up beautiful paper lanterns. These lanterns are more than just pretty lights; they are a symbol of the Buddha's enlightenment, representing the light of wisdom and understanding. My day is also a time for doing good deeds. People show kindness by giving food and other gifts to those in need. Another powerful act of compassion is releasing caged birds, letting them fly free. This is a sign of freedom and a reminder to show care for all living things, no matter how small.
