Bassoon

Hello, I'm a Bassoon. I am a big, tall instrument made of dark wood. My voice is very deep and rumbly, like a friendly bear humming a happy tune. When you see me, you will notice I am tall like a little tree, and I have lots of shiny silver keys that sparkle under the bright lights. My special job is to sing the low, cozy notes in the orchestra. I love to make beautiful sounds that you can feel in your tummy. Making deep, warm music is what I do best, and it makes me very proud.

I wasn't always the way I am today. A long, long time ago, my ancestor was called the dulcian, and it was made from one big piece of wood. But around the year 1650, some very clever instrument makers in a place called France had a brilliant idea. A family of instrument makers, including a man named Martin Hotteterre, decided to change me. They made me in four separate pieces that fit together like a fun puzzle. When you put all my pieces together, I became the bassoon you see today. This wonderful change helped my voice become much clearer. I could sing more notes, both low and a little bit high. I was so happy I could sing new songs for everyone.

My job in the orchestra is so much fun. I get to play all kinds of music. Sometimes my voice is deep and thoughtful, like I am telling a serious story. But other times, I get to be the funny clown of the orchestra. I can make bouncy, oom-pah-pah sounds that make children giggle and tap their toes. I love playing with all my friends, like the high, whistling flutes and the sweet, singing violins. When we all play together, we create a beautiful song that fills the whole room with happiness and joy for everyone to hear.
