The Secret Map on the Ceiling

Hello. I am a very special grid. You can call me a secret map. My real name is the Cartesian Coordinate System, but that's a big name for a little helper like me. A super smart man named René Descartes made me a long, long time ago. He loved to think while he was cozy in his bed. One day, back in the year 1637, he shared me with the world. Before I came along, it was very tricky to tell someone exactly where to find something. It was like saying, 'The toy is over there.' But where is 'there'? I help make 'there' a real spot.

Would you like to hear how I was born? It's a fun story. One morning, René was resting in his bed, looking up at the ceiling. He saw a tiny fly buzzing around. Bzzzz. The fly landed on a spot. René wondered, 'How can I tell my friend exactly where that little fly is?' He imagined a line going across the ceiling, from one wall to the other. Then he imagined another line going up the ceiling, from bottom to top. He thought, 'I can count how many steps across and how many steps up to find the fly.' And just like that, I was born. I am a map made of lines.

Now, I am like a treasure map for the whole world. I help people draw maps that show you how to get to the playground or a friend's house. When you play a video game, I help your character know where to run and jump. I even help robots know where to go. I feel so happy when I help everyone find their special spot in the world, one little dot at a time. I make finding things easy and fun.
