The story

I Am Hangul, The Korean Alphabet

Hello. My name is Hangul, and I am a very special alphabet. I was born from a wish to help everyone speak their mind. Long, long ago in a beautiful land called Korea, it was very hard for most people to read or write. They had to use thousands of complicated characters that came from China. Imagine trying to remember a different picture for every single word. It was so difficult that only a few people had the time to learn them all. This made me feel sad for all the people who had wonderful stories, important ideas, and loving letters in their hearts but couldn't write them down. I knew there had to be a better way, a simpler way for everyone to share their thoughts. I wanted to be a voice for all the people, not just a few.

My story really begins with a kind and wise ruler, King Sejong the Great. He saw how his people struggled, and he had a wonderful idea. He dreamed of an alphabet that was so simple and logical that anyone could learn it. So, around the year 1443, he gathered his smartest scholars to help bring me to life. They worked together to design me very carefully. They said, “Let’s make the letters look like what your mouth does when you speak.” So, my consonant letters are shaped like your tongue, lips, and throat when you make a sound. For example, the letter for 'g' looks a little like the root of your tongue blocking your throat. My vowel letters are made of simple lines and dots representing the sky, the flat earth, and a person standing up. After a lot of hard work, I was finally ready. I was officially introduced to everyone in a guide book in 1446 so they could learn how to use me.

Once people met me, everything started to change. It was like a big, bright light turned on all across Korea. Farmers could write down notes about their crops, merchants could make signs for their shops, and parents could finally read stories to their children. People who had been quiet for so long could now write poems, letters, and books, sharing their feelings and dreams with the world. I was so happy to see this happen. My simple shapes made it easy for almost everyone to learn to read and write in just a few days. I am very proud that I have helped millions of people in Korea and all around the world share their amazing ideas. I am still here today, helping new friends learn, write, and connect with each other, and I hope I can be your friend, too.
