Hello there. You use me every single day, but have you ever wondered where I came from? I am your numbers. The whole team. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Before I came along, counting was very tricky. People used to use little sticks, tally marks, or even different letters from their alphabet to keep track of things. Imagine trying to write down how many cookies you have using a big pile of pebbles. It was so confusing. But then, a long, long time ago, I was born in a faraway, colorful land called India. Some very clever people, sometime between the 1st and 4th centuries, thought there had to be an easier way. So, they invented me, a simple team of ten symbols that could change the world.
My real magic is that you only need ten of me to make any number you can dream of, no matter how big. The secret is a special idea called ‘place value.’ This means that where you place one of my digits changes its worth. A '2' by itself is just two, but put it next to my best friend, and it can become twenty or two hundred. Oh, I must tell you about my best friend. He is the superhero of our team, and his name is Zero. For a while, he was the missing piece. A brilliant mathematician in India named Brahmagupta wrote all about Zero around the 7th century. He showed everyone how important Zero was for holding a place, making it easy to see the difference between 1 and 10. My journey didn't stop there. In the 9th century, a scholar named Al-Khwarizmi wrote books about me, and I traveled from India to the Arab world. Later, in the year 1202, a traveler named Fibonacci saw how helpful I was and brought me all the way to Europe in a book. I was ready for a new adventure.
