The story

The Story of the London Underground

Hello there. I am a very special train. Do you know why? I travel under the ground. Whee. I live in a big city called London. A long, long time ago, the streets of London were very busy. So many horses and carts clip-clopped everywhere. It was so slow to get around. A kind man named Charles Pearson had a wonderful idea. He thought, "What if a train could go under the busy streets?". He wanted to help everyone get to places much faster. And that's how the idea of me was born.

Before I could ride, many busy workers had to help. They dug and dug with their shovels to make long, dark tunnels just for me. It was a very big job that took a long time. They built special tracks for my wheels to roll on. Then, my first big day finally came. It was a chilly day on January 10th, 1863. I was so excited my wheels wiggled. My very first trains were steam trains. They went "huff and puff" and made lots of smoke, like a little cloud. Choo-choo. It was a bit cloudy in my tunnels, but everyone was so happy and didn't mind. Imagine riding a train under the ground for the very first time. People cheered and waved as I rolled along my new tracks. I felt so proud to be helping them on their journey through my cozy tunnels. It was the best day ever.

As more people wanted to ride me, I started to grow. I got longer and went to new places. Then, something wonderful happened around the year 1890. I got new electric trains. Zzzip. They were quiet and didn't make any smoke. My tunnels were much brighter and cleaner. I got more and more tunnels and shiny new stations for people to wait in. Now, I zoom all over London, connecting friends and families. Every day, I help millions of people get to work, school, and fun places quickly and safely. I love being London's helpful underground train.
