The story

I Am a Pulley!

Hello. I am a pulley. I look like a little wheel with a line in the middle, just right for a rope to snuggle into. My superpower is helping people lift heavy things. With my help, something super heavy can feel as light as a feather. Up, up, up it goes. I am very, very old. I was born a long, long time ago, around the 16th century BCE. It was in a sunny, warm place called Mesopotamia. I was so excited to start my job. I have been helping people lift and pull for thousands and thousands of years, and I love my job very much. It makes me feel strong and useful.

Many years later, around the 3rd century BCE, I met a very clever friend. His name was Archimedes, and he lived in a place called Greece. Archimedes discovered a wonderful secret about me. He learned that when you use more than one of me together in a team, lifting becomes super-duper easy. One pulley is good, but two or three pulleys are amazing. We worked together to lift giant, heavy stones to build tall, beautiful buildings. Heave-ho. We even pulled big wooden boats right out of the sparkly blue water so they could be fixed. I felt so proud to work with my friend Archimedes and show everyone how strong we could be together.

Even though I am an old invention, I am not hiding in a museum. I am still working hard everywhere you look. Have you ever seen a flag go all the way to the top of a tall flagpole? Whee. That’s me, pulling it up. When you see a big crane on a construction site, I am there, lifting heavy beams. I even help the blinds on your window go up and down. I may be just a simple wheel and a rope, but I love making big jobs feel small and easy for everyone. I show that even little helpers can do big things.
