The story

The Sword in the Stone

Hello. I am a sword, but not just any sword. My hilt glitters with jewels, and my blade shines like a moonbeam on a quiet lake. For a long, long time, I waited, held fast in a great gray stone in a churchyard, a secret waiting for the right person to find me. My name is Excalibur, and this is the story of how I helped a boy become a king in the legend of the Sword in the Stone.

Long ago, in the misty land of Britain, the good King Uther Pendragon had died, and the kingdom was left without a leader. Knights and lords argued about who should be the next king. The wise magician, Merlin, knew something had to be done. One frosty Christmas morning, the people woke to find a miracle. In the courtyard of a great church in London, there was a huge stone with an anvil on top, and plunged deep into it was a magnificent sword—me. Written on the stone in letters of gold were these words: 'Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England.'. All the strongest knights and proudest lords came to try their luck. They pulled and heaved and grunted, but I would not move even a tiny bit. I was waiting for someone special.

One day, a young boy named Arthur, who was kind and humble, came to the city for a tournament. His older brother, Sir Kay, had forgotten his sword, and Arthur ran off to find one for him. He saw me, sitting in the stone, and not knowing the story, he thought I was just a sword that someone had left behind. He took hold of my hilt, and I slid out of the stone as easily as a spoon from a bowl of pudding. When he brought me to Sir Kay, everyone was amazed. They made him put me back in the stone, and one by one, the mighty knights tried again to pull me out. None could. Then, Arthur stepped forward and drew me out once more. At that moment, everyone knew. Arthur, the boy no one expected, was the true king.

Athur became one of the greatest kings the world has ever known, and I was always by his side. Our story, the myth of Excalibur, has been told for hundreds of years in books, songs, and movies. It teaches us that true strength doesn't come from big muscles or a loud voice, but from a good and brave heart. It reminds us that heroes can come from anywhere, and that sometimes, the most important person is the one you least expect. And so, the legend lives on, inspiring everyone to look for the magic and courage hidden inside themselves.
