Just want Marya Morevna?
Hello there! My name is Marya Morevna, and I live in a kingdom of wide, green fields and sunny skies where I lead my own army. It is a wonderful place, but even the happiest kingdoms can face great challenges. One day, a handsome prince named Ivan came to visit, and his kind heart and brave spirit made me fall in love. We were married and our happiness was like a bright candle flame, easily blown out by a dark wind. This is the story of how our courage was tested, a famous tale from the land of Russia known as Marya Morevna, the Warrior Princess.
Not long after we were married, I had to ride off to battle with my soldiers. Before I left, I gave Ivan the keys to our entire palace. I told him, “You may go anywhere you wish, but you must promise me you will never look inside one small, dusty closet in the deepest part of the castle.” But curiosity is a powerful thing, like a little seed that grows into a giant tree. While I was away, Ivan couldn't stop thinking about the closet. He opened the door and found a terrible sorcerer, Koschei the Deathless, chained to the wall. Koschei begged for a drink of water. Feeling sorry for him, Ivan gave him some. With each sip, Koschei’s magic returned until he was strong enough to break his chains! With a great crash, he flew out of the palace, snatched me from my army, and carried me away to his gloomy kingdom. When Ivan discovered what happened, his heart was full of sorrow, but also bravery. He set off on a long, long journey to find me. On his quest, he sought help from his powerful brothers-in-law—an eagle, a falcon, and a raven—who could fly across the world searching for me. But even they could not find Koschei's hidden land.

Ivan didn't give up. He journeyed to the deep, dark woods to find the mysterious and tricky Baba Yaga. She lived in a hut that stood on giant chicken legs! The hut could spin and run, and it was very frightening. She tested Ivan’s courage with difficult tasks, but seeing his good heart, she decided to help him. Baba Yaga told Ivan that to defeat Koschei, he needed a horse even faster and more magical than the sorcerer’s. After many trials, Ivan earned such a horse and galloped to Koschei's kingdom. He found me and we escaped, but Koschei was right behind us on his own mighty steed. Ivan’s horse was faster, and together we learned Koschei’s greatest secret: his life was not in his body. It was hidden away inside a needle, which was inside an egg, inside a duck, inside a hare, locked in a chest buried under a giant oak tree on a faraway island. It was a puzzle! Ivan found the chest, and with his strength and cleverness, he broke the egg and snapped the needle. The evil sorcerer was defeated forever, and we returned to our kingdom to rule together, side-by-side.
Our story has been told for hundreds of years around warm fires in Russia. It’s not just about magic horses and evil sorcerers, though those parts are very exciting. It’s a story that shows how true bravery means being clever, kind, and never giving up, even when you make a mistake like Ivan did. It also reminds everyone that a hero can be a strong warrior princess just as easily as a brave prince. We both had to be strong to win our freedom. Today, the tale of Marya Morevna inspires artists to paint wonderful pictures and storytellers to write new adventures, proving that a great story of courage and love is truly timeless.
