The Contest for Athens
From the deep blue of my watery kingdom, I can feel the whole world tremble. I am Poseidon, ruler of the seas, and my voice is the crashing of waves and the roar of earthquakes. Long ago, on a sun-drenched coast in Greece, there stood a magnificent new city, its white stone buildings gleaming on a high, rocky hill. My niece, the wise goddess Athena, and I both saw its potential and desired to be its patron, to protect it and give it our name. The other gods on Mount Olympus declared that we must compete for this honor, a divine challenge to see whose gift would be most valued. This is the story of that challenge, the myth known as The Contest for Athens.
We stood before the city’s people and their king, Cecrops, on the great rock of the Acropolis. I decided to go first, to show them what true power looked like. With all the force of the ocean concentrated in my arms, I struck my three-pronged trident against the solid stone. Can you imagine the ground shaking with such force? The rock split open, and from the new crack, a spring of water burst forth, shimmering in the sunlight. 'I give you the sea!' I boomed, my voice echoing across the hill. 'This spring is a symbol of my power. With it, you will have might upon the waves, build a great navy, and become powerful traders across the world.' The water that pooled was salty, just like my ocean home, a potent reminder of the sea's wild, untamable strength. The people gasped in awe at this display. Then it was Athena’s turn. She was so different. She did not shake the earth or roar like a storm. Instead, she knelt quietly and gently planted something in the soil. Before everyone’s astonished eyes, a tree began to grow, its trunk thickening and its branches spreading with silvery-green leaves and dark, ripe fruit. 'I give you this tree,' she said calmly. 'Its wood can build your homes, its fruit will give you food, and its oil will light your lamps and flavor your meals. It is a gift of peace and prosperity.'
King Cecrops asked the people to choose. They looked at my powerful, salty spring and then at her peaceful, useful tree. They murmured amongst themselves, their voices a low hum of deliberation. While the sea offered adventure and glory, the olive tree offered everything they needed to build a good life, day after day. It was a gift for their homes, their tables, and their future. They chose Athena’s gift. In that moment, a hot rage flooded me, for the sea does not like to be second best. I sent a great flood to lash at their shores as a show of my displeasure. But my anger eventually faded like the tide going out. The city was named Athens in her honor, and they built a grand temple for her, the Parthenon, on the very spot where we had our contest. I came to understand their choice. While Athena became their protector, my gift was not entirely forgotten. The people of Athens still honored me, and they became the greatest sailors in the ancient world, their ships ruling the very seas I command. They learned that a great city needs both wisdom for peace and strength for adventure.
A Story That Still Inspires
This story has been told for thousands of years, carved into stone and painted on pottery. It reminds people that there are different kinds of power. There is the loud, crashing power of the ocean, which is impressive and exciting. But there is also the quiet, steady strength of a tree that provides for its community year after year. The myth of our contest for Athens lives on, not just as a tale of gods, but as a way to wonder about what makes a home special and what gifts are most important. It inspires us to think about how different strengths, like wisdom and power, can exist side-by-side to make something truly great.
